What does the Bible say about Friendship?
What is Friendship?
True friendship is one of the greatest gifts given to us from God. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16 KJV). The Apostle, John, said “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13 KJV).
In the beginning, the Bible tells us of the first relationship in God’s creation of the world, he said, “it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18 KJV).
King Solomon said, a friend loveth at all times (Proverbs 17:17 KJV). The Apostle, Paul, gave us a beautiful guide for our friendships. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-6 NIV) Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep (Romans 12:15 KJV).
Friendship with God

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.
That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.
Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
Good Friends are a Blessing
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.
Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him. And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven. So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
